What Is Immigration?
Immigration is the process through which individuals become permanent residents or citizens of another country. Historically, the process of immigration has been of great social, economic, and cultural benefit to every country on Earth. The immigration experience is very long and varies in some regions. In many cases, it results in the development of multicultural societies (think: melting pot). Many modern states are characterized by a wide variety of cultures and ethnicities that derive from previous periods of immigration.
Immigration is the process through which individuals become permanent residents or citizens of another country. These immigrants are waiting to get off the boat at Ellis Island, NY, USA. Late 19th century.
Nations maintain sovereign control of their external borders and are therefore able to monitor and determine the number of immigrants who are able to remain permanently. This can vary from country to country, and in some areas borders are more open than in others.
Immigration In The EU
In 1985, for example, several European states signed an agreement in Schengen, Luxembourg, to end all internal border checkpoints within the new union, and subsequent European Union (EU) immigration and asylum law was agreed to by the European Council in Tampere, Finland, in 1999.
EU law states that European Economic Area (EEA) nationals have the right to live and work (right of residence) in all other member states. In many states, this entitles newly arrived immigrants to public services (housing and social services, for example). In the United States the mechanism for selecting legal immigrants is complex, but all legal immigration flows have at least three components: family (spouses, parents, or children of U.S. citizens), employment (many different categories, including unskilled workers and investors), and humanitarian (including refugees and asylum seekers).
How Does It Affect Me?
So that’s how the process goes. So what? That’s the same process you’re going to have to follow if you want to leave the US and head for a new life. You’re going to have to cross all your t’s and dot your i’s because people from all over the world are going to be standing in line ahead of you and you don’t want to lose your seat at the table.
Before you decide to pack up your house and move to another country, there will be quite a few things you are going to need to take care of. You are going to need to make a plan. This is a major life event and should not be taken lightly.
Making a list and checking it twice...
How will you get rid of all of your possessions? You can't bring more than you can stuff in some luggage - unless you want to pay the astronomical prices to ship your stuff across the planet! Who will take care of your pets? You can bring a cat or dog, but the process for that is an entire blog post all to itself. Are you planning on moving by yourself or will you be bringing loved ones with you too? There are different rules regarding family relocation depending on the target country and you will have to know them!
Those are just some of the many things you will have to consider BEFORE you even think about buying that plane ticket. We can help make this highly-involved process much easier for you.
What are my goals?
Are you still at a working age or do you now collect some kind of a retirement pension? Do you have a post-secondary education? Perhaps you are a high- skilled worker? Will you be seeking integration through employment/entrepreneurship in your host country or will you try to go the asylum route? We can help you determine what the best option will be for your unique situation.
Note: Keep in mind, that, although every country in the world has some kind of political asylum procedure in place, not every country has the same rule system. Some countries adhere to the Dublin Protocol/Regulations on Asylum, while others formulate their own laws. We’ll help you find out if your country of choice would be a good fit or will even accept you as an asylum seeker.
